Texas Transition and Employment Guide

Texas Transition and Employment Guide

Planning for life after high school is an important part of every student’s educational journey. For students receiving special education services, transition planning helps connect classroom learning with future goals, including college, career training, employment, independent living, community participation, and adult services.

The Texas Transition and Employment Guide is designed to help students and families better understand the transition process and the resources available across the state of Texas. This guide can support meaningful conversations during ARD/IEP meetings and help families prepare for important decisions as students move toward adult life.

About the Guide

The Texas Transition and Employment Guide provides information about statewide services and programs that assist students receiving special education services as they prepare for life beyond the public school system. Families can use the guide to explore postsecondary education, career pathways, vocational supports, employment services, independent living options, and other resources that may help students build a successful future.

Available Resources

Families may access the Texas Transition and Employment Guide in English and Spanish using the links below. Additional information and resources are also available through Texas SPED Support.

Transition Planning and ARD/IEP Meetings

Transition planning is a student-centered process. It should reflect the student’s strengths, preferences, interests, and long-term goals. During ARD/IEP meetings, families and school staff work together to discuss appropriate transition services, courses of study, postsecondary goals, and supports that may help the student prepare for life after graduation.
